A married couple in Afghanistan have been arrested for cutting off the ears and nose of a Muslim cleric in retaliation for allegedly s*xually assaulting their 14-year-old daughter. -

The father invited the cleric to his house for dinner before carrying out the disfiguring attack.

I cut off his ears and nose, says the father of the r*pe victim, Abdul Qahar, who was dressed in a traditional shalwar kameez with a turban. I don't know if a cat ate his ears, but his nose went down the drain, he boasted.

A police spokesman in Baghlan, said Qahar had tied the cleric's hands and feet and cut off his nose and an ear as an act of revenge. The 32-year-old cleric denied he had assaulted the girl, but the police spokesperson says they have opened a case against him.

Barber stabs graduate to death during Chelsea/Atletico match

SaheedWhen on Wednesday 29-year-old Saheed Badmus went to a viewing centre on Lamina Street, Egbe, Lagos State, to watch the UEFA Champions League semi-final match between Chelsea Football Club and Atletico Madrid, little did he know that was the last match he would ever watch.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the graduate of Ekiti State Polytechnic was stabbed to death by a barber identified only as Yemi, during an argument that broke out at the viewing centre.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene on Thursday, observed a large crowd on the street talking about the incident.
Saheed’s friends took our correspondent to a portion of the street where spinkles of Saheed’s blood could be seen.
They told PUNCH Metro that passions were high at the viewing centre as most of the Chelsea fans were desperate to see their team qualify.
It was learnt that during the match, Saheed stood up and Yemi shouted at him and told him to sit down as he was blocking him from viewing the match on the screen.
An elderly man was said to have cautioned Yemi against shouting, but Yemi insulted the elderly man.
A friend to the deceased, Muyideen Waheed, told our correspondent that an argument then ensued between the barber and Saheed.
He said, “Yemi was shouting and one elderly man told him to keep quiet, but he shouted the man down. Saheed then cautioned against shouting at an elderly man. Yemi attacked him.
“The owner of the centre pushed both Yemi and Saheed out of the place and locked them out.”
It was learnt that once they got outside, Yemi picked up a bottle from a nearby pub and stabbed Saheed.
It was learnt that as Saheed ran for his life, Yemi chased him and then stabbed him in the face.
Waheed told PUNCH Metro that when some of the viewers came out, they saw the deceased’s lying in a pool of blood.
He said they rushed him to two hospitals, but he was rejected.
He said, “There was power failure and everywhere was dark. Most of us were inside the viewing centre, so we did not hear Saheed scream. When we came out, we saw him lying in a pool of blood. We rushed him to Obeeh Hospital, but he was rejected. We then took him to Bisalam Hospital, but he was referred to Igando General Hospital.
“On getting to Igando, he was pronounced dead.”
Residents described Yemi as a violent man who had on several occasions attacked youths in the area.
While lifting up his shirt, Waheed said, “You see this scar on my chest. It was a stab wound inflicted on me by Yemi.”
Our correspondent, who visited Saheed’s mother’s house, learnt that he was her youngest son.
The mother, Isiwatu, while weeping profusely, said she was pained that she did not live to reap the fruit of her labour.
“My son was a gentle man. We lived together and he was responsible. I still saw him on Wednesday before he went to watch the match. I struggled to send him to school and now, all is wasted. He had no wife and child.
“Yemi has stolen my joy and I want him arrested and sentenced to death for his crime. This was not a case of two people fighting. It was  an outright murder.”
It was learnt that after killing the deceased, Yemi fled to his father’s home, but his father alerted the police and he was arrested by policemen from the Ikotun Police Division.
When our correspondent visited the police station, Yemi was seen writing his statement.
Yemi’s father, who refused to identify himself, described his son as a troublemaker and wondered where he got the behaviour from.
He said, “I hardly see my son. Sometimes, I don’t see him for as long as three months. He just came to my house last night (Wednesday), crying. He told me that he had stabbed someone at a viewing centre.
“I reported him to the police. I don’t know why he went to watch the match in the first place. What kind of trouble is all this?
“When I saw the picture of the boy he stabbed, I shed tears because it is every parent’s worst nightmare.”
One killed while celebrating goal
Meanwhile, our correspondent learnt that another person, identified as Destiny Ameh, lost his life at another viewing centre in the Badagry area of the state.
A police source told our correspondent that the victim was struck in the head with a sharp object while celebrating a goal.
The source said, “Around 8.30pm, one Destiny Ameh was allegedly hit with an object by an unidentified person while watching a match between Chelsea FC and Atletico Madrid at a viewing centre along Sofoluwe Street, Magbon, Badagry Expressway, Magbon, Badagry.
“He was rushed to Victoria Private Hospital where he was confirmed dead. The owner of the viewing centre has been arrested.”
Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, could not be reached for comment.

Poverty not Nigeria’s problem, says Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday said Nigeria’s problem was not poverty but wealth redistribution.
He spoke on Thursday at the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress 2014 May Day celebration in Abuja.
But the organised labour which accused the government of double-speaking on the nation’s economy, advised him to be wary of ministers and aides who had been deceiving him with different statistics.
It said the recent rebased Gross Domestic Product released by the government was at variance with the earlier claims by some government officials who had earlier said “the country was broke.”
Jonathan said government was interested in wealth creation and had intiiated a lot of programmes to create opportunities for Nigerians to have access to finance.
He promised the workers that his government would continue to collaborate with the organised labour to improve their welfare.
On the insecurity in the nation, Jonathan said government was reviewing its strategies to curtail the threats posed by insurgency and other insecurity challenges.
“We will continue to work hard. We must keep our unity together,” he said.
Jonathan said the National Conference was convoked to solve the problems confronting Nigeria and for the country to evolve a master plan that would promote unity and peaceful coexistence.
He pointed out that the organised labour, the civil society and youth  groups were given slots in the conference because they were considered as critical stakeholders in building a better future for the country.
But the President of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Bobboi Kaigama, at the event advised Jonathan to be wary of his ministers and aides who had been deceiving him with statistics.
He said, “Thank God for May Day as it affords us perhaps the best opportunity to let the President know that indeed this is not the best of times in our dear country.
“We can prove it to you, Mr. President that some of your cabinet members and aides have not always told you the truth.
“For instance, some of your cabinet’s members and aides told us not too long ago that our economy was not healthy and that the country was broke. And now they say the economy is in perfect order, one of the leading economies in the world and the most progressive in Africa. We, the organised labour wonder when this double-speak will end.”
Kaigama identified greed and irresponsibility on the part of many successive leaders as factors responsible for the economic woes of the country.
According to him, many politicians parading themselves as progressives today are not genuine and are only deceiving the electorate.
In his speech, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwaheed Omar, who criticised the economy, lamented that there were two classes of citizens: the super rich and the super poor.
He accused government of skewing the payment of wages and salaries against workers, adding that the time had come to link the remuneration of political office holders to the salaries of workers in the public sector.
Omar said, “The poverty situation in the land is real and grim. Over the years, government churned out laws, policies and programmes that disempowered and pauperised its citizenry, leaving a tiny clique protected.
“Wealth and income are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a tiny proportion of the citizens. This situation, if unchecked, portends dangers for peace and stability. Government needs to evolve policies to promote inclusive growth and a more equitable society.”
Omar disagreed with the notion that the 2014 budget would create opportunities for job creation and inclusive growth.
“We find no details in the budget to promote these objectives,” he said.
Saying that it was immoral to play politics with the lives of people, Omar charged the government to confront the root causes of the violence by addressing the problems in the education sector, unemployment and poverty.
“As long as our policy makers are more interested in making policies in the interest of the ruling class to the detriment of the working people and the Nigerian poor, they cannot guarantee enduring peace and the search for sustainable national development will not only remain elusive but a mirage.”
Omar lamented that the spate of violence was taking a toll on the country.
He said, “The humanity in us is giving way to something sinister; a degenerate society incapable of human feelings or development, the perpetrators and the victims alike. I am afraid, we may lose our humanity and our society except something drastic is done.”
According to him, the turn of events in the fight against Boko Haram is creating a negative feeling.
“We do not need anyone to tell us that we have a serious situation in our hands. The war on terror does not seem to be going on well at the moment. Our security forces despite gallant efforts have suffered reversals, taking direct hits in their critical asset areas, raising concerns about their capacity or willingness to win this war.
“We feel seriously about the state of the nation’s security infrastructure. In spite of the relative huge security votes in the past few years, it is weak and inadequate. We also believe conflicting political interest, ambitious operational order and primordial sentiments are some of the factors undermining the counter terror war.
The NLC boss said the National Conference was a great opportunity to redesign a new Nigeria “that meets our expectations, allay the fears and concerns of all its constituent parts.”
Also in an address delivered by the chairman of Oyo State NLC, Bashir Olarewaju, during the Workers Day celebration at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Ibadan on Thursday, NLC condemned the kidnapping of more than 200 girls by insurgents in Chibok, Borno State.
The celebration was however tainted with protest from the staff of Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria who are demanding the removal of the institute’s Director General, Malachy Akoroda.
“In the past few years, the nation has witnessed unprecedented security challenges that have tasked our imagination, resources and temperament. From the Niger Delta to the northern-most part of the country, we have had one form of violent or another that threatened peace and security of the nation.
“The most threatening of these is the insurgency in the North-East. One of the most trying periods has been the kidnapping of more than 200 girls in Chibok. We feel seriously concerned about the state of the nation’s security. Despite of the huge security votes, our security infrastructure is weak and inadequate. It is important that government confronts the root causes of these violence and deal with the issue of functional education, poverty and unemployment.”

FG not supporting northern govs’ development efforts – US

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben AbatiThe United States has said that efforts being made by the northern state governments in addressing the Boko Haram’s appeal in the region are not getting required support from the Federal Government.
The US Department of State stated that the Federal Government had failed in addressing “grievances among northern populations” which it listed as high unemployment and dearth of basic services.
This  was contained in the US Bureau of Counterterrorism 2013 Country Reports on Terrorism which was released on Wednesday evening.  The yearly report assesses trends and events in international terrorism.
The report decried the Boko Haram insurgency which it said “continued throughout the northern part of the country,” noting that the violence was spilling over into neighbouring Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.
The report partly read, “The government of Nigeria’s efforts to address grievances among northern populations, which includes high unemployment and a dearth of basic services, made little progress. Some state governments in the North attempted to increase education and employment opportunities, but with almost no support from the Federal Government.
“The United States called on the Nigerian government to employ a more comprehensive strategy to address Boko Haram that combines  security efforts with political and development efforts to reduce Boko Haram’s appeal, address the legitimate concerns of the people of northern Nigeria, and protect the rights of all of Nigeria’s citizens.”
The report also faulted the way and manner “several government agencies” were performing counter-terrorism functions, saying the development was hampering the success of the war against terrorism.
According to the US document, although the Office of the National Security Adviser is ostensibly coordinating the war against terror, the level of inter-agency cooperation and information sharing was limited.
It added, “The Nigerian government’s criminal justice institutions were not significantly strengthened in 2013, although several donor countries, including the UK, worked closely with the Ministry of Justice to assist in prioritising how to investigate and prosecute suspected terrorist cases.
“Among the problems that deterred or hindered more effective law enforcement and border security by the Nigerian government were: a lack of coordination and cooperation between Nigerian security agencies; a lack of biometrics collection systems and the requisite data bases; corruption; misallocation of resources; the slow pace of the judicial system, including a lack of a timely arraignment of suspected terrorist detainees; and lack of sufficient training for prosecutors and judges to understand and carry out the Terrorism (Prevention) Act of 2011 (as amended).
“Several government agencies performed counterterrorism functions, including the Nigerian Department of State Security the National Police Force and the Ministry of Justice. It is important to note that the Nigerian military had the primary responsibility for combating terrorism in north-eastern Nigeria. While the counterterrorism activities of these agencies and ministry were ostensibly coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, the level of inter-agency cooperation and information sharing was limited.”
The report observed that Nigeria made significant progress in its “anti-money laundering/countering the financing of terrorism” efforts in 2013, relative to its action plan.
When contacted, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Dr. Reuben Abati, said he would need to read the report first before reacting to it.

May Day tragedy: Fresh Abuja blast kills 30

Scene of the blastBarely three weeks after a bomb blast killed over 71 persons in Nyanya, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, another explosion claimed about 30 lives on Thursday evening.
The blast, which was believed to be a suicide attack, occurred around 8:45pm when a bomb-laden car exploded at the Karshi Taxi Park, a few metres from where the April 14, 2014 explosion took place.
Eyewitnesses told The Punch that 25 bodies were taken to the Maitama District Hospital, Asokoro, four corpses were dropped at the National Hospital while one body was taken to an unidentified hospital in Nyanya.
Scores of injured people were also evacuated by ambulances to different hospitals for treatment.
But a statement co-signed by the Head, Public Relations, NSCDC and NEMA Press Officer, Emmanuel Ezekiel, said that 10 bodies had been deposited in the mortuary while 13 unconscious persons were receiving treatment in different hospitals.
It added that other injured victims were being attended to by medical personnel, urging  members of the public to avoid hindering rescue efforts.
“While security agencies have condoned off the area of the explosion this evening in Nyanya, Abuja, response agencies have moved injured victims to hospitals and at least 10 lifeless bodies have been deposited in the mortuary while 13 unconscious victims are receiving medical attention in different hospitals in Abuja. Other injured victims too are being attended to.
“The public are urged to cooperate with security agencies and avoid rushing to the scene to guard against hampering the efforts of the various agencies working together to ensure public safety,” the statement said.
Security sources said the perpetrators of the blast might have planned to leave the explosive-laden car at the motor park overnight so that it could be detonated on Friday (today) for maximum effect, but the bomb accidentally went off, killing the driver and other innocent people.
A Nyanya resident, who simply identified himself as Lambert, said he was walking along the road when he heard a loud blast which shook the area and sent everyone scurrying in different directions.
He said, “I went to the park, but the scene was alight with burning vehicles and there were corpses of people on the ground as well as dismembered bodies; there were body parts on the ground including hands, and heads. It was a gory sight and I had to leave the scene.”
Meanwhile, NEMA has called on FCT residents to donate blood to assist victims of the blast.
