Pastor hacks wife over failure to attend church

 

The police in Ogun State have arrested a pastor with a first generation pentecostal church, Daniel Samuel, for allegedly attacking his wife, Patience Samuel, with machete and inflicting deep cuts at the back of her neck.

The pastor allegedly attacked his wife over her alleged persistent failure to attend prayer meetings and other church programmes.

Our correspondent gathered that 45- year-old David, who became the pastor of the Ode Remo branch of the church about a year ago, had travelled to Owode-Egba in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, where his wife works and allegedly hit her with the machete that left her injured.

Here & There Gists learnt that the pastor had accused his 42-year-old wife of shirking in her dedication to church programmes.

The pastor was said to have on several occasions complained to his in-laws about his wife’s obsession with office work at the expense of her family and church services.

Our correspondent however learnt that Patience also sells firewood, charcoal and food at the Redemption Camp to augment her husband’s N15,000 monthly salary and to support their five children.

An elder brother of the victim, Samson Akpikie, was said to have earlier arranged a meeting between the couple and other district pastors of the church for December 15 (yesterday) to resolve their lingering differences.

But the Pastor, who could not wait, was said to have visited his wife at her station where their disagreement degenerated into a heated argument. The pastor allegedly attacked his wife with a machete during the argument.

It was said David initially alerted the neighbours that his wife was attacked by some unknown men.

But doctors at the Federal Medical Center, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where the injured wife was taken to, ordered that the case be reported to the police.

The pastor was said to have gone to the Owode-Egba Police Station, where he told the police that the woman was attacked by unknown men.

The police were said to have detained the pastor who later confessed to the crime after interrogation.

The Ogun Command Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.

He said, “The pastor is with us, he initially lied to the police that his wife was attacked by some men, but later confessed after interrogation. He will soon be charged to court for false information and wounding.”

At the FMC, our correspondent observed that the pastor’s wife could only utter some incoherent words when she was asked questions.

The Consultant of Orthopaedics and Trauma, who was in charge of the patient, Doctor Ojeblenu, said the woman would remain under close observation because of the depth of the injury and the psychological trauma she might be going through.

 

ASUU leaders assault journalists in Minna over strike report

 

After hours of endless waiting by journalists, leaders of the Academic Staff Union of University, emerged from the Senate Building of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, venue of the National Executive Committee meeting of the union, to harass the anxious newsmen.
They shouted repeatedly, “who invited these stupid people.”
One of the notable members of the Union that instructed security men to order the journalists to leave the building is the Chairman of ASUU in FUT, Minna, Dr. Abdulfatai Jimoh, who went ahead to assault the Daily Trust correspondent, Aliyu Hamagan.
Jimoh had earlier thought Hamagan was a member of the Union and invited him to come closer. He then asked, “Who brought this stupid people inside? What are they doing here?”
Hamagan, however, responded, “I am one of the people you are calling stupid. I will not have you insult us like that.”
Jimoh, on finding out that he was speaking with a journalist, pushed Hamagan and asked him to leave the premises, saying, “You people are intruding, we did not invite you. Get out of this place now.”
The meeting, which started at about 11.30am and holding in behind closed doors at the Senate Building of the FUT, Minna, was ongoing at the time of filing this report at about 7pm.
The scenario took another twist when members of ASUU NEC LOC emerged to inform journalists that some of them (ASUU) are not comfortable with the presence of the pressmen.
Jimoh, who was at this time furious, threatened the media men, saying “Anything wey una see, make una take am like that, because we didn’t invite the media.”
However, there was a disagreement among the members over the presence of the media. Some suggested that the journalists should stay because they were doing their job, others persisted that “we did not invite them. When we need them, we will invite them.”
The Vice Chancellor FUT, Minna, Prof. Musbau Akanji, who got the news that ASUU assaulted some journalists, rushed to the venue pleading with the journalists.
“Although, I am not a part of the meeting, but I am apologising on their behave because they are in my territory. This place (FUT, Minna) is a Federal Government institution, and it is a public place that everybody including journalists can enter especially when they are discharging their responsibilities,” Akanji said.

 

'Lone gunman' dead, one other student shot at Arapahoe High School near Denver; target was a teacher

A disgruntled teen who had threatened to kill his debate team coach barged into his Colorado high school Friday, demanded to know where the man was and then wounded a student before killing himself with a shotgun blast, said officials and a friend.
Karl Pierson, 18, was a sharp, opinionated student at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo., with dreams of joining the Air Force, one of his friends said.

Feeling that his life plan was ruined by a suspension, he carried a grudge and the shotgun into the school, said Joe Redmond, Pierson’s pal and the debate team’s captain. Pierson missed the coach, Tracy Murphy, but he left a 15-year-old girl critically wounded.
Pierson wanted to get even with Murphy for suspending him in September after he made the threat, Redmond told the Daily News.

“There was absolutely no indication this was tied to Sandy Hook,” Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said. “The shooter that is deceased appears to be the lone actor in this tragic event.”

 

The student fired once and nearly hit Murphy, who managed to escape the building, Llerenas said.
"So when he did that he took one shot at him and missed his head, and he said he felt the wind just go up and down," the custodian said.

 

Explosion at Alsip chemical plant

Firefighters this afternoon were on the scene of an explosion at a chemical plant on the border between Alsip and Blue Island that resulted in at least two people being injured.
The explosion was at Blue Island Phenol LLC, 3350 W. 131st St., in Alsip, an employee of the plant said. Black smoke billowed from part of the plant as several fire crews poured water on the blaze from a safe distance using at least four different hoses.
Two people were injured and transported to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. All other employees are accounted for.
Roads were closed in the area, and after starting about 11:30 a.m., the fire was still burning about 1:25 p.m.
Earlier information that the plant is located in Blue Island was incorrect. Although the ZIP Code for the property is a Blue Island ZIP Code, resulting in it being listed as in Blue Island on web maps and other directories, it is within the corporate limits of Alsip.

Kansas airport terror plot foiled: officials 

 

Kansas authorities said today they have arrested a man for allegedly plotting to blow up the Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita with a carload of explosives.

Terry Loewen, a 58-year-old aviation technician from Wichita, intended to die a martyr in the bombing, U.S. District Attorney for Kansas Barry Grissom said at a news conference.

Authorities said Loewen was believed to have been motivated, at least partly, by religious beliefs.

The man was taken into custody early Friday, officials said, as he attempted to make his way onto airport property with what he thought were active explosives. They said he had planned the attack for months.

40-year-old fetus was discovered inside the abdomen of an 82-year-old woman. The elderly Colombian woman complained of pain and discomfort in her abdomen, but she never expected she was carrying a fetus. Doctors estimate the fetus remained inside her abdomen for nearly 40 years.

Doctors at Tunjuelito Hospital originally diagnosed the woman with gastroenteritis, which can cause diarrhea and cramping. However, an ultrasound ruled out an infection. They eventually ordered an X-ray of her abdomen. When they viewed the results, they were stunned — the elderly woman was carrying a calcified fetus.

Although calcified fetus’ are rare, they can happen. The fetus is called a lithopedion, also referred to as a stone baby. A lithopedion begins when a fertilized egg implants and begins to develop outside the uterus. When the egg implants inside the fallopian tube, it is called an ectopic pregnancy.

Rarely, a fertilized egg will travel into the abdominal cavity, where it can become implanted anywhere from the bowel to the aorta. Although the fetus cannot survive inside the abdomen, doctors usually terminate the pregnancy to prevent future problems.

As reported by NBC News, in most cases the tissue will simply break down inside a woman’s body. However, in the case of the 40-year-old fetus, it continued to grow to an advanced stage.

If the fetus continues to develop, it can become too large to absorb. As a natural reaction, the fetus and the surround tissue eventually calcify. The process prevents the decomposing tissue from spreading infection inside a woman’s body.


lithopedion rarely cause further issues, as they often go unnoticed. For some woman, the fetus is large enough to cause pain and swelling.

The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine cites 280 recorded cases of lithopedion since 1582. While most “stone pregnancies” last around 22 years, at least one woman carried a calcified fetus for more than 60 years.

Philly.com reports that the Colombian woman was transferred to another hospital to have her 40-year-old fetus removed.

‘My mother sold my baby for $1,600′

A woman in Cross River state has been arrested by the police after her daughter reported her for selling her baby or N253,000(about $1,600)
Miss Ndidi Nkwegu, alleged that her mother sold her baby daughter to a child trafficker, who has also been nabbed, in the neighbouring Ebonyi state, after she sold the baby at a bigger price to another ‘baby business tycoon’ based in Abuja.
“When I came back home and asked my mother for the whereabouts of my daughter, she couldn’t tell me anything reasonable.
“I discovered that she had bought so many things which she never had before; actually, my mother was never happy with me when she discovered that I was pregnant, prior to my giving birth to my baby girl.
“I had to call the police; my mother is now in police detention in Cross River State.
“After interrogation, the police discovered that she was the one who sold my baby to a woman who is a child trafficker,” she told newsmen.

The case blew open after the the Ebonyi State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested four persons allegedly engaged in child trafficking.
They were paraded Friday.
Mrs Ego Echendu, the Commandant of NSCDC in Ebonyi, told a news conference at the NSCDC Headquarters in Abakaliki, said that the suspects were arrested on Thursday in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi.
“Yesterday we were able to arrest some suspects we have been trailing and monitoring for about one month now; they are involved in child trafficking,” he said.

”The Traffic Unit of the Command foiled the suspects’ plot to convey their victims out of the state. However, other suspects are still at large but as soon as the command completes its investigation, the case would be transferred to the agency responsible for such matters,’’ she said.
Echendu said that one of the traffickers was a dealer in the child trafficking business while the other suspect was a buyer.
“We had to strike yesterday following the information that reached us.
“The buyer was about to move to Abuja to sell the baby to another set of people for a higher amount; the information we got was that the baby was bought at the cost of N253, 500.
“We are tiding up our file. As this is not one of our core mandates, we are going to transfer the case to the agency saddled with such responsibility,” she said.
Echendu said that the suspects had confessed to the crime, adding that they also divulged information on some of their accomplices.
“The dealer is Blessing Nwilo, a teacher in Sharon Secondary School, Abakaliki, but she hails from Enugu; the buyer is Ngboro Chikezie from Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi.
“She claims to be an Area Officer with the Ministry of Education in Ebonyi,” she said.
