Cops: 2 burned after mix of pot and alcohol explodes
A man and his friend suffered burns after he ignited a mixture of marijuana and grain alcohol with a butane lighter in his South Loop apartment, according to authorities.
Daniel Tatman, 21, and the friend, also 21, both suffered burns on their faces and arms and were taken in fair to serious condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.
Tatman was apparently extracting oil from the marijuana by mixing it with grain alcohol and then cooking the mixture over a flame from a lighter while in the bathroom, police said. Tatman asked his friend to come in and when he opened the door, the mixture exploded and blew a hole in the wall, police said.
Firefighters entered the 7th-floor apartment in the 1200 block of South Michigan Avenue and found the two suffering from second-degree burns on their faces and arms and about $30,000 worth of cannabis scattered around the bathroom, police said.
Tatman was charged with possession of cannabis, reckless conduct with great bodily harm and criminal damage to property, all felonies. He is due in bond court today.
